DevWatch Alert
School Road closure to through traffic

WBC have now confirmed dates for the closure of School Road to through traffic and also an associated Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (“ETRO”).

This follows on from our Alert of 31 March 2022 which can be viewed here https://www.barkham.org.uk/index.php/devwatch/archive/234-bvra-devwatch-alert-school-road-to-be-closed-beyond-wood-lane-to-through-traffic

There will be a number of works carried out on as part of “Arborfield Village Improvements”, but School Road is the one which will mostly impact Barkham residents.  In relation to School Road, the WBC notice reads:

Please be aware that Wokingham Borough Council as Traffic Authority has made an Order under Section 14 (1) (a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 the effect of which is prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along:

  1. B3349 School Road, Arborfield between its junctions with Eversley Road and Langley Common Road.

The alternative route for all vehicles affected by this restriction shall be via Eversley Road and Langley Common Road or by this route in reverse.

The work is planned to take place between 27th June and 30th August 2022.  When complete, only emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel from Barkham to Arborfield via School Road.  The road will be blocked with a “Modal Filter” 30 metres past the junction with Wood Lane.

Whilst the decision to go ahead with the works is now final, residents will have the opportunity to comment on the effect of the road closure via the ETRO.  WBC will seek feedback on how the closure is working in practice, including the impact on Langley Common Road and The Coombes Primary School.  The ETRO has been delayed but is now expected to be published on Tuesday 14 June and comments are invited for at least 6 months, after which a decision will be taken as to whether the changes should be made permanent.  It should be available to view w/c 13 June on the WBC website at

This will contain details of how to send your comments to WBC but the email address is tm.consultations@wokingham.gov.uk.

As a separate matter, the Instalcom (Wood Lane) planning appeal is still pending and the outcome of that may have an impact on the volume of traffic on School Road and Langley Common Road.  For information, our previous update on Instalcom can be found here: https://www.barkham.org.uk/index.php/devwatch/archive/232-bvra-devwatch-alert-woodlands-farm-instalcom-update

Kind Regards
